A leading company in the banking industry is seeking to employ a Financial Markets Specialist - FX to deliver high quality work efficiently and effectively in order to meet internal and external client expectations. The candidate will be expected to oversee junior Financial Markets Specialist who conduct transactions and capture trades on behalf of the Bank.


  • Conduct financial markets research and recommendations as well as policy-related research and analysis to guide and support the implementation of monetary policy and the management of the assets of the Corporation for public Deposits (CPD). In addition, the candidate will be expected to stay abreast of financial markets developments and provide accurate market information, commentary and recommendations on a regular basis
  • Conduct desk research and literature reviews and meet with various market participants (e.g. fund managers, traders, analysts and economists) and other central banks to review their priorities and focus areas and to inform their research
  • Write and present report(s) on research conducted
  • Prepare design proposals on monetary policy tools and frameworks and analyse the impact of implementation
  • Manage bespoke elements of committee administration as requested by assuming the role of secretary or co-secretary of internal and/or external committees on a rotational or permanent basis
  • Conduct both qualitative and quantitative research and analysis into movements, trends and/or patterns within several market areas such as foreign exchange, money, commodities, equity and bond markets, with more emphasis on fixed income and money market asset classes in the South African economy and across other major economies, for implementation of monetary policy and to support financial market initiatives the Financial Markets Department is responsible for
  • Guide the trading strategy to be utilised, including daily liquidity management, applying due consideration to the impact of transactions, namely CPD assets, financial markets transactions and auctions, on behalf of the Business Group and other client
  • Supervise the transactions of more junior Financial Market Specialists
  • Analyse the relevance of existing reference rates and design new rates where necessary
  • Contribute to designing governance frameworks that relate to the code of conduct on benchmark rates
  • Provide oversight on the market commentary prepared by the junior Financial Market Specialists
  • Coordinate, consolidate and finalises regular market analysis reports (e.g. financial market daily) without quality assurance by a more senior Financial Market Specialist
  • Draft rules relating to the oversight of market functioning and structure, including the code of conduct
  • Conduct comprehensive research for special projects, applying a robust and structured research methodology
  • Stay abreast of all methodological developments relevant to own disciplines that affect the collection and development of time series and market research and apply this in own research
  • Analyse how these changes impact current methodologies and makes proposal on how current methodologies should be adjusted to accommodate these changes
  • Assesses what is required from current work and then make specific changes to systems or own methods in order to improve the standard of current work being done
  • Review, update and improve database structures on a regular basis to ensure all data are properly captured and that aggregate time series and cross-section data are calculated accurately
  • Prepares and make convincing presentations to own team on a regular basis as well as to departmental forums and other departments of the Business
  • Assist with the preparation of briefings, speeches and presentations for the senior management forums in the Business as well as external forums
  • Contextualise presentations for a particular audience, with the ability to ‘think on his or her feet’ when answering questions from the audience
  • Support on-the-job training for the junior Financial Market Specialists, which may be in the form of workshops or internal forums on research conducted


Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this position, candidates must have:

  • An Honours degree in Economics, Actuarial Science, Financial Engineering, Mathematics of Finance, Finance or an equivalent combination of education in the required field and job-related experience
  • 5 – 8 years’ experience in the financial markets’ environment
