Synopsis

A prominent financial organisation is currently seeking an individual to assume the role of Lead Risk Specialist. The successful incumbent will be responsible for providing expert knowledge and advice regarding risk analysis, and applying risk management principles, practices and techniques in order to assist the organisation in delivering high-quality analysis and risk management strategies.

Description

  • Provide input to the organisation’s strategic plan, and identify solutions to business problems and opportunities for optimisation.
  • Identify strategic challenges, opportunities and priorities affecting the financial, operational and/or compliance risks associated with domestic policy formulation, and the investment of the organisation’s gold and foreign exchange reserves and recommend appropriate strategies.
  • Lead, and support the Head of the Business Research, in defining research priorities for the organisation.
  • Lead internal evaluations of methodologies and work practices to guide the refinement and continuous improvement of research methodologies and practices.
  • Co-ordinate and manage the formulation and implementation of the strategic asset allocation and risk budgeting processes.
  • Review and make final recommendations on the investment guidelines, risk and return strategies, and governance and risk control plans for domestic and foreign investment portfolios.
  • Advise on the performance of domestic and foreign investment portfolios, market and credit (risk) limits, compliance violations, and actual or potential process failures applicable to the organisation.
  • Conduct ongoing high-quality research and analysis of domestic and global economic, financial and regulatory trends and themes, and associated risks.
  • Identify and conduct leading research into the latest thinking on methodologies and work practices that comply with international standards, guidelines and best practices, and make final recommendations regarding improvements based on findings.
  • Guide other specialists on their quantitative and qualitative research and report drafting, quality assure the work of other specialists, and facilitate the ongoing evaluation of work and processes.
  • Validate, guide and support the development of in-house quantitative models in line with the organisation’s strategic objectives.
  • Lead, and also support the Head of the Business Research in, building and maintaining strategic relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Review final reports and lead presentations to senior management and organisational committees.
  • Conduct research into the most complex topics facing the organisation, either independently or by leading a research project team.
  • Lead projects and teams, and coordinate ad hoc tasks as and when necessary.
  • Represent the organisation at high-level internal and external meetings, and at public or industry forums, both locally and internationally.
  • Produce externally peer-reviewed articles.
  • Identify critical areas of future learning and development required by the organisation and ensure the transfer of knowledge and skills to junior specialists.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Finance, Risk Management, Investment Management, Mathematical Sciences or an equivalent qualification.
  • A minimum of 10 to 12 years’ experience in risk management in the financial services industry.
  • Sound knowledge of the financial market’s environment (e.g. treasury and asset management environments).
  • Advanced knowledge of financial instruments and risk management.
  • Advanced knowledge of modern risk management and research methodologies.
  • Expert knowledge of local and global compliance laws and regulations applicable to risk and investment management.
  • Sound knowledge of capital and or reserves management methodologies, and also statistical validation methods (e.g. stress testing, scenario analysis, back testing).
  • Advanced proficiency in quantitative finance, including advanced understanding and application of risk and quantitative modelling inclusive of optimisation techniques.
  • Ability to communicate and interact on both technical and high-level strategic topics and issues.
  • Ability to handle complexities of various risks.
  • Advanced proficiency in data analysis and modelling.
  • Sound understanding of programming logic along with intermediate to advanced proficiency in VBA or MATLAB.
  • Ability and experience in providing support to projects and project teams.
  • Advanced report writing skills.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft (MS) Office suite, with a thorough knowledge of MS Excel (including VBA), and proficiency in Bloomberg and Reuters.
